Continental Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 707 was a flight between Chicago, Illinois and Kansas City, Missouri on May 22, 1962 with 45 passengers and crew on board.
The Crash:
Just after the doors at the gate for the flight were closed, a passenger named Thomas G. Doty had arrived at the gate. Despite airline policy, the doors were reopened for Doty to board the flight. Flight 11 then departed O'Hare Airport at 8:35pm. The flight was uneventful until 9:17pm when an explosion occurred on board. The explosion ripped the tail from the rest of the fuselage resulting in it violently pitching down, causing the engines to tear off in the process. The plane crashed into a field killing all but one passenger named Takehiko Nakano, who died shortly after. The FBI found out that Doty had set off six sticks of dynamite in the rear lavatory as an act of suicide to claim $300,000 on life insurance for his family.
