Nigeria Airways Flight 2120, a DC-8 was a flight between Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Sokoto, Nigeria on July 11, 1991 carrying 261 passengers. This flight was a charted flight with a wet leased aircraft from Nationair, carrying Nigerian pilgrims to and from Mecca.
The Crash:
After take-off, the pilots had reported to ATC that there were problems with the jet. The aircraft was on fire and the pilots attempted to turn the crippling jet around, but the airplane experienced an inflight breakup and crashed into the Saudi desert killing all on board. The crash was caused by a mechanical fire caused by the plane's two tyres overheating from under inflation.
