United Airlines Flight 811, a Boeing 747-100 was a flight between
Los Angeles and Sydney with two stopovers in Honolulu and Auckland on February 24, 1989 with 355 passengers and crew on board.
The Incident:
Flight 811 took off from Honolulu at 1:52am. At 2:09am, the flight
crew heard a loud 'thump' noise which shook the aircraft. Two
seconds later, the forward cargo door of the jumbo jet had ripped
off of the fuselage. An explosive decompression was caused and part of the cabin floor caved in and broke off causing 9 passengers to die from getting sucked out of the aircraft. The pilots began to descend to a breathable altitude and began to prepare for an emergency landing in Honolulu. The debris from the explosive decompression damaged engines 3 and 4 causing both to ignite into a fire. Both engines were shut down. As the plane neared the airport, the gear was deployed and the flaps could only be deployed a certain amount due to the damage. The aircraft successfully touched down at Honolulu at 2:34am. None of the 9 bodies that were ejected could be found, however there were small body fragments of body parts and clothing found on one of the engines indicating that one or more passengers were sucked into the engine. The cargo door blew off due to a design flaw which caused the door to become unlocked in mid-air.
