Varig Flight 254, a Boeing 737-200 was a flight between São Paulo and Belém with several stopovers in the cities of Uberaba, Uberlandia, Goiania, Brasília, Imperatriz and Marabá on September 3, 1989 with 54 passengers and crew on board.
The Crash:
Prior to take-off from Maraba towards the final destination, the crew accidentally entered an incorrect heading into the computer while composing the flight plan to Belem. The heading that was entered was 270 degrees when the correct heading that should've been entered was 027. Because of this, the computer directed the pilots to fly west, rather than flying northeast. The flight then ended up over a remote area over the Amazon jungle. The pilots attempted to make a landing at an alternative airport, however this attempt failed and the plane eventually ran out of fuel. The flight descended and crash landed into the jungle. 13 people on board were killed while 41 people survived.
