Air Canada Flight 143, a Boeing 767-200 was a flight between Montreal and Edmonton with a stopover in Ottawa on July 23, 1983 with 69 passengers and crew on board.
The Incident:
During the flight, while cruising at 41,000 feet the aircraft's warning system sounded indicating that there was a problem with the fuel pressure on the left side of the aircraft. The pilots assumed a fuel pump had failed, so they turned it off since gravity should be able to feed fuel to both engines. During the flight, the instruments had read that there was sufficient fuel to complete the flight, however this was wrong as the wrong calculations had been put in, making the instruments believe there was about twice as much fuel as there really was. Eventually, the left engine had failed and the pilots began to prepare to divert to the nearby city of Winnipeg. Shortly after, the right engine had also failed making the plane a glider. With the engines failing, this also caused the hydraulic systems to fail as well giving the aircraft no control. This was fixed by the automated deployment of a ram air turbine, which provides the aircraft with control in case of an emergency. Since the plane was descending too fast, it had been calculated that the jet couldn't reach Winnipeg and the pilots made the decision to land at a former air force base in Gimli. The pilots were unknown to the fact that part of the base had been converted into a race track complex. As the plane got closer to the runway, it was apparent that the plane was too high and too fast so the captain executed a forward slip, a manoeuvre that is supposed to make an aircraft descend faster, without airspeed increasing. As the plane touched down, the front gear of the plane collapsed and the nose of the jet slammed onto the ground. The plane was close to hitting two boys on bicycles. There were no major injuries among the 69 on board. The aircraft was brought back into service and was retired in 2008. It was given the name 'Gimli Glider'.
