Disk fragmentation occurs when the files on your hard disk get divided up and placed in multiple locations. In order to read a file, the hard disk may have to do multiple seeks slowing down the reading of the file. This video looks at how to defrag your hard disk in Windows 7 using the graphical interface and the command line.
Windows 7 Defrag demo 01:20
How to defrag a drive
To defrag your hard disk, open Windows Explorer, right click the drive and select Properties. From the Properties of the hard disk, select the Tools tab. From the Tools tab, press the button Defragment now.
The process of defragging a drive takes a long time to complete. If you want to first see how fragmented your drive is press the button Analyse Disk. Microsoft recommends not defragging the drive unless the drive is more than 10% fragmented. Disk defragmenter has a scheduler so you can schedule the disk defragmenter to run when the computer is not being used.
Files like system files, encrypted files and open files cannot be defragged. Before you start the defragmentation process, it is a good idea to close all open applications.
Command line
The disk defragmenter can be run from the command line with the defrag command:
Defrag [[Drive letter]] /a
This command will analyse the drive and determine how fragmented it is.
Defrag [Drive letter] /x
This command will consolidate all the free space, putting it at the end of the drive. This process can take less time than defragging the hard disk; however, if the hard disk is very fragmented the process can take almost as long as defragmenting the drive.
/c
Instead of specifying a drive letter you can use the /c switch. This will defrag all the drives in the system.
/v
This switch will enable verbose mode, giving you more information about the defragging process.
/u
This switch adds a progress meter to the defragging process.
