Air France Flight 447, a 3 year old Airbus A330 was a flight between Rio de Janerio and Paris on June 1, 2009 with 228 passengers and crew on board.
The Crash:
Flight 447 took off from Rio at 10:03pm bound for Paris. The plane cruised at 35,000 feet. From 1:48am onwards the plane left radar and ATC could no longer track the flight. At 2:08am, the flight turned left due to turbulence. The autopilot and auto thrust then disengaged by themselves. The reason for this was because the pitot tubes had been blocked with ice, which caused the instruments to behave strangely. The plane then began to climb, when the pilots got confused. The plane lost speed and then began to stall. The crew most likely didn't understand the stall situation, leading them not to take action and put the nose down. The plane remained stalled until it impacted with the water. All 228 people on board were killed. At the time, it was the worst aviation accident of the 21st century until Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.
