TransAsia Airways Flight 222, an ATR 72-500 was a domestic flight in Taiwan, between Kaohsiung and Magong on July 23, 2014 with 58 passengers and crew members on board.
The Crash:
The flight was uneventful until the approach stage. The weather at Magong was very deteriorating and the visibility was poor so the runway was difficult to see. The flight was put in a holding pattern with 3 other flights. After a little while, the aircraft was cleared down to 2,000 feet for landing and then later 400 feet. The pilots then continued to descend lower due to over confidence in landing the plane at a lower altitude. The aircraft had now gone below the Minimum Descent Altitude. At 7:05pm, the crew disengaged the autopilot, unaware that the plane was turning left while still descending. The airplane was at 72 feet when it started to collide with several treetops. Flight 222 then crashed and exploded near Xixi Village killing 48 people, with only 10 people surviving.
